Visit to Porto

Hitoshi Oi visited the University of Porto in mid to late September. This time, the main objective was to mentor and advise Tomoya Furukawa who had been studying with Dr Ines Dutra's group at Port0 since late August. He was studying the Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) from the basics to its application to the breast cancer image analysis.

Study Abroad Scholarship

Tomoya Furukawa, who is an associate member* of our group (also known as the assistant of the Operating Systems course ) has been awarded the study abroad scholarship for this year.

He plans to visit University of Porto, Portugal this summer and study the image analysis using the inductive logica programming (ILP) techniques in Prof. Ines Dutra's group. He will be the second exchange student from Aizu to Porto under this scholarship.

*officially he's affiliated with another lab.

Hitoshi Oi is visiting Departamento de Ciência de Computadores (Department of Computer Science), of University of Porto, Porto, Portugal.

His plans during this visit include discussions on the research collaboration with colleagues and giving a talk introducing Aizu to the people in the University of Porto.

37th SIGEVA/IPSJ and Dr João Pedro Pedroso

On March 30, we will host the 37th meeting of SIGEVA/IPSJ.

As an ivited speaker for the meeting, we will welcome Dr João Pedro Pedroso from University of Porto, Portugal. Aizu and Porto have agreement on the exchange programe development, and he hosted an exchange student from Aizu, and also visited us in December 2010 and gave us a special lecture.

Dr João Pedro Pedroso from University of Porto, Portugal

On December 17 (Friday), we are going to welcome Dr. João Pedro Pedroso from University of Porto, Portugal. He is Lecturer in Computer Science and was the advisor of Kazuaki Takahashi when he visited Porto under support of Aizu Short Term Abroad Study scholarship ( photos by Kazuaki Takahashi). He is also the supervisor of Rui Jorge Rei, who was studying with us from January to April this year under the support of JASSO scholarship.

He plans to give us a special lecture, titled "An introduction to the Traveling Salesman Problem". The primary audiences of the lecture are the students in the section of the Operating Systems course taught by Hitoshi Oi. However, we plan to make it open to public as the room capacilty allows. The detail will be posted here as it is fixed.

Abstract: One of the most widely studied problems in discrete optimization is the Traveling Salesman Problem. In this talk we will make an introduction to this problem and to strategies that can be used for solving it. We will also present some variants, focusing on applications in subjects related to computer science.

Unofficial International Talk: University of Porto, Porto, Portugal

Dear all,

University of Porto is one of schools with which Aizu has signed the exchange program agreements. From January this year, an exchange student from Porto, Rui Jorge Rei, who received the scholarship from JASSO, has been with us and engaged in research.

We set an unofficial and casual opportunity for him to talk about introductions to Porto, Portugal and his research.

We will have another speaker, Kazuaki Takahashi, who is a senior student in our group and stayed at Porto for 6 weeks last summer with the support of Aizu Short Study Scholarship.

No registration necessary; walk-ins are welcome.

An Exchange Student from Portugal

We will welcome an exchange student from Portugal. Rui Jorge Rei, is a PhD student in Computer Science at University of Porto. He will stay in Japan, with support of JASSO Exchange Support Program, from January to March next year.
